Faisal was overthrown, his government was dismantled, and he and his family sent into exile in Palestine. This left the British with the responsibility of what to do with him, and a year later he was installed on the throne of Iraq as king, despite the fact he had little if any association with that country.

While the French were greeted in Lebanon as heroes and liberators, their reception in Syria was hostile from the onset, and the French never really established themselves in any context other than as foreign occupiers. The League of Nations rules in regard to the French Mandate were specific:

Enact measures to facilitate progressive development of Syria and Lebanon as independent states

Develop within three years organic law in agreement with native authorities, and encourage local autonomy

Raise militia for defense and maintenance of public order under local authorities

No part of Syria or Lebanon to be placed under the control of a foreign power

Religious interests to be fully guaranteed, with free exercise of all forms of worship

French and Arabic to be the official languages

Consent required for any modification of the articles from the League of Nations or the Permanent Court of International Justice
